This season, the Minnesota Orchestra launched our first-ever Musical MicroCommission—an initiative to bring a major new work to the stage of Orchestra Hall with funding from hundreds of “micro” donations from music lovers across Minnesota and beyond.
These donations have been used to commission an orchestral composition by American composer Judd Greenstein, which will be the culminating event of our 2011-12 Inside the Classics season.
In the months leading up to the premiere, you’ll hear about Judd’s progress on the blog. You can also join Sam and Judd in The Listening Room, to discuss his musical influences and share your opinions of the music featured. Get to know Judd’s music a little more by listening to recordings of two of his chamber works, performed after the November and January Inside the Classics concerts. And, as a season finale, Judd will join conductor Sarah Hicks and series host Sam Bergman onstage in March for an illuminating look at the piece in the concert’s first half, followed by a performance of his new work, Acadia.

We’re calling this project The Listening Room, and essentially, you can think of it as an online book club, with music instead of books. Here’s how it works: Four times between now and March, we’ll announce a specific recording chosen by composer Judd Greenstein, and we’ll provide a link to either download the file or buy the CD. The music and the link can be found on this page, and on the Inside the Classics blog. We’ll encourage blog readers and concert-goers to send us your initial impressions of the music, questions you have, and opinions. Then, on the discussion date, Sam will get the conversation started with Judd, sparking a much broader discussion with you!

New Amsterdam Records founders, label mates, and very special guests will perform new work by Judd Greenstein, Nico Muhly, Missy Mazzoli, William Brittelle, Ryan Brown and more on Thursday, March 29, at Bryant Lake Bowl in Minneapolis. Presented by Kate Nordstrum Projects, this event is a great opportunity to hear another side of Greenstein’s repertoire before the world premiere of Acadia at Orchestra Hall. Inside the Classics concerts are anything but ordinary. The evening begins with conductor Sarah Hicks and violist Sam Bergman presenting a lively exploration of the concert program, providing you with insights to enrich your listening experience. The Orchestra also performs musical examples, so you know what to listen for and why. After intermission, sit back, relax and enjoy a full performance of the featured music.
